Behind the Scenes of Fatmouth – My Experience as a Production Assistant
On Tuesday, 21 January, I joined the rehearsal for Fatmouth at the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts. I was only there for the final hour, but the intensity of the performances and the energy in the room were electric. I left feeling inspired – and excited for the shoot ahead.
Filming took place on 25 and 26 January at a house in Berala, Western Sydney. I was up by 6am both days to arrive on set by 8. As the Production Assistant, I did whatever was needed to support the crew – organising the set, staying alert during takes, and operating the clapperboard. I was always on standby, helping ensure the production ran smoothly and efficiently.
Over the two days, I had the chance to chat with a variety of professionals and gain insights into different departments, from makeup and SFX to directing. I also came away with a whole new list of films to watch, thanks to the recommendations of people I met.
Working on a professional set was a fantastic experience. I was the youngest person there, but I felt respected and valued as part of the team. The environment was focused but creative, and I loved every moment of being immersed in that world.
About the Film & Director
Fatmouth is an independent short film written, directed, edited, and co-produced by Dan Watson, a Sydney-based filmmaker. The story centres around a man named Marcus who thinks he’s coming over to watch the State of Origin – only to find himself the subject of a surprise intervention. It’s a darkly comedic and personal take on confronting truths among friends.
Collaborating closely with producer Aidan Sezonenko, Dan Watson has described the project as his “most intimate and personal film to date – a real labour of love”.
